We need your help packaging life-saving meals for the hungry in Iowa, across the nation and around the world at the Meals From the Heartland packaging center in West Des Moines. Most people package over 400 meals during their two-hour shift, so you are making a huge difference in the lives of lots of children. We have a variety of shifts available Tuesday through Saturday each week. Individuals (ages 8-105), small teams and large groups are all welcome! Bring your friends, teams, coworkers and family. People work as a team to scoop dry food ingredients into bags, weigh and seal them and put them in boxes.

Broadlawns Gift Shop

Details

Provide customer support in the gift shop.

Our gift shop will be a year old in November, so the employees are our primary customer base until we get the word out. They scan their badges for purchases which gives them a payroll deduct on all purchases.

Volunteer Description of Duties
Job Title: Gift Shop Volunteer

General Description:
Work as a cashier in the Medical Center’s Gift Shop.

Characteristic Duties:

May perform any of the duties listed below:
Interact with staff, visitors, and patients in helping them locate desired gift shop items.
Operate computerized register system.
Answer the phone.
Take payment for purchases and make changes when necessary.

Assist in stocking supplies when needed.

Assist in keeping the Gift Shop clean and tidy.

Provide directions and give non-medical information when requested.

Open the gift shop and run opening reports.
Close the gift shop, run closing reports, and call Security to pick up End of Day Tender Bag with sales receipts at end of day.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Ability to volunteer for a weekly 4-hour shift.
6-month commitment (non-consecutive).
Ability to communicate with people of all backgrounds.
Familiarity with principles of retailing.
Ability to count money and make change.

New Home Construction - Habitat for Humanity

Volunteer to Help Build Homes, Communities, and Hope!

At Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, we’re all about affordable housing! We build, repair, and supply home materials for low-income homeowners in Polk, Dallas, and Jasper County. However, we can’t do it without your help! Learn how to swing a hammer on our New Home Construction sites or build displays in our Habitat ReStores! There are many ways to help out, and we’d love to have you with us.

New Home Construction/Rock the Block Home Repair: We build around 30 homes and repair over 250 homes for families each year. No experience? No problem! 90% of our volunteers have never swung a hammer. Our construction managers are available the entire day to teach you anything you need to know. Shifts run from 8:15am–4pm with lunch on your own from 11:30–12:30, available Wednesday–Saturday for ages 16+.

Silver Cord students under 18 years of age will need to volunteer alongside an adult 21+, but can can also be approved to complete hours on their own in our Habitat ReStores. Zoo Crew

Details

Zoo Crew – This is a special volunteer opportunity for youth ages 13-17 to get involved at the Blank Park Zoo! Participants will have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas around the Zoo. This may include: assisting Summer Safari camp counselors, providing guests with directional and educational information about the Zoo, helping to keep the Zoo clean and volunteering during family friendly events! The goal of the Zoo Crew program is to foster personal responsibility, job skills, self-initiative and inspire conservation action for the next generation.

Picnic and Play Summer Meals Program

Details

Helping to set up, hand out meals, and clean up the site. All meals are packaged and served cold from a cooler. Volunteers hand out meals to anyone age 18 years and under and keep track of the number on a tally sheet. Volunteers may have a meal if they are under 18 years old. Games and toys will be provided in an activity wagon. Volunteers are encouraged to play and interact with children. Volunteers arrive 15 minutes before service time and may leave once the food and supplies have bee picked up. Total time is approximately 1.5 hours. We will operate this program everyday (06/05 – 08/09, excluding July 4-5) at six locations.

Habitat ReStores: Did you know that the Habitat ReStores generate enough income every year to fund more than half of our Habitat homes? As a volunteer, you’ll be helping us process donations, assisting customers, and lending a hand around the store. Flexible, half-day shifts are available Monday–Saturday for ages 14+.

Locker Combination Reset

Details

Volunteers will first be taught how to reset locker combinations, and then they will work to set all lockers to the new combinations. Volunteers will start on Monday, July 29th, and the number of hours volunteers earn will be determined by the number of volunteers and how fast they work. We are looking for a maximum of 10 volunteers.

iPad Organization and Deployment

Details

Students will be placing iPads and the respective hardware (case, cord, charger) in assigned teacher piles in the library.

Trailridge iPad Organization

Details

Volunteers will be organizing iPads into groups based on Advisory teachers. Master lists will be provided to volunteers to streamline the process.
