Details

We are in need of volunteers to prepare newspapers to be used with litters of puppies in their kennels, at foster homes and at the Rescue. Newspapers and rubber bands are provided. Volunteers will pick up items in West Des Moines, prepare the papers at home, then return the completed rolls to West Des Moines. An instructional video will be texted to volunteers.

The papers need to be opened, removing half sheets and ads, then stacked to about 5/6 inches high. The stack is rolled into a tube and rubber banded. Volunteers must include a note on their completed bundles with their name and time spent before hours will be approved. Meals from the Market

Details

Meals From The Market offers vendors and patrons at the Des Moines Farmers’ Market an opportunity to give back to the community by providing fresh food to the homeless and hungry. We need 12 volunteers each Saturday, stationed in different zones throughout the market, to connect with vendors and transport donated items in carts. Volunteers will also help DMARC staff load donations into a truck. Detailed information and a map of the market will be provided in an email after signing up!

Northwest Youth Football

Northwest Youth Football is a non-profit, developmental program with the goal to encourage football participation through high school and beyond. We provide age-appropriate games for youth in kindergarten through 7th grade. We are looking for students who can assist our program in a variety of ways! GirlPower is an initiative of the Chrysalis Foundation to help end violence toward girls in the  community. The project will bring healthy relationship awareness and education to young women  participating in Chrysalis After-School programs. Kiwanis Miracle League provides children and adults with physical or mental challenges a safe and spirited environment where they can hit, run, and catch on a baseball field. Every player is matched with a “buddy” to help with hitting, catching, fielding, or throwing the ball, and to provide encouragement and assistance as needed. Buddies provide safety first; they enthusiastically play baseball with their special player; and encourage the player to have fun!  Buddies will receive a brief orientation – no experience required!

Ongoing opportunities:

  • Admission Desk/Garden Shop Assistant: Saturdays & Sundays, 10AM–1:30PM or 1:30–3PM. Greet guests and process admission, gift shop sales and provide an awesome guest experience! Learn how to work with the public and a point-of-sale system.  Volunteers should be involved a minimum of 1–2 times per month.
  • Robert D. Ray Asian Garden: Sundays through October, 9–11AM.  Work with a small group of volunteers to remove weeds and debris and help this new garden space thrive and look its best!
  • Activity Tables: Saturdays, 10AM–12:30PM or 12:30–3PM. Entice guests to learn about the world of plants a little more by demonstrating and providing information on some easy to learn activities. Examples include how to create a terrarium, plant petting zoo, scented geranium leaves and more.
  • Drop-in Activities: Saturdays, 11AM–1PM or 1–3PM, once a month. Greet and assist guests who wish to take part in these make-and-take activities. Volunteers take payment, provide instructions and keep supplies available.

We need your help packaging life-saving meals for the hungry in Iowa, across the nation and around the world at the Meals From the Heartland packaging center in West Des Moines. Most people package over 400 meals during their two-hour shift, so you are making a huge difference in the lives of lots of children. We have a variety of shifts available Tuesday through Saturday each week. Individuals (ages 8-105), small teams and large groups are all welcome! Bring your friends, teams, coworkers and family. ENGin English Practice for Ukrainian Youth

Details

ENGin is a non-profit organization that pairs Ukrainian youth with English speakers for free online conversation practice and cross-cultural connection. Ukrainian students are ages 13-30, and volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers commit to a one-hour virtual meeting with their partner each week, for at least 10-12 weeks. Training is provided, but volunteers do not need to teach English or grammar. Just chat with your Ukrainian student!

Our mission is to improve Ukrainian youth’s spoken English and intercultural skills, leading to greater academic and professional opportunities. Each volunteer-student pairing is a thread tying Ukraine to the world, and will help create a generation of English-fluent, culturally competent young Ukrainians to rebuild our nation.

Panora P.E.T.S. Saturday Shelter Volunteer

Details

We have a variety of volunteer needs at our Panora shelter! We are looking for students who can spend time giving extra attention to our cats and kittens. Volunteers can also work on special projects such as organizing supplies, light cleaning, painting, window washing, etc.

For students who are 18 (or younger if accompanied by a parent), we have an ongoing need for monthly assistance. Volunteers will typically help one Saturday a month from 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Responsibilities include completing onsite pre-approved and scheduled adoptions, handling kitten intakes, administering medications, accepting donations, communicating with the public, performing assorted cleaning tasks, and interacting and socializing with cats and kittens. An experienced shelter attendant will be on-site to handle feeding, watering, and cleaning shelter functions and will provide assistance to volunteers as needed.

Service Learning Program at Ronald McDonald House

The volunteer Service Learner will assist the House Manager and House Service Associates in day-to-day tasks for the organization. Duties include welcoming families, shadowing check-in procedures and making families feel at home. SCI Spooky Engineering Challenge

The Science Center of Iowa is excited to prepare for the annual Spooky Science Event! We are looking for a group of students to combine a passion for engineering with the spooky season to create a giant spider web spanning the Upper Founders Hall oval opening. Students will have an opportunity to meet each other over FREE pizza and soda, and brainstorm a plan on Sunday, October 9 from 4pm-6pm before the big webbing on Sunday, October 23 from 4pm-6pm.

This is a great opportunity to meet other students that share a passion for engineering or just love science! Challenge yourself and make a difference with us as we continue our mission of engaging and inspiring Iowans along their journey of lifelong science learning!

Adaptive Sports Iowa Split the Pot Raffle

Details

The Iowa Wild hockey team has invited Adaptive Sports Iowa to be the recipient of the “Split the Pot” raffle that takes place at all home games throughout the 2022/23 season. Volunteers will assist in selling raffle tickets throughout the game until the end of the second intermission. At that point, a drawing will take place and the proceeds raised during the game will be split between the winning ticket and Adaptive Sports Iowa. This is a tremendous fundraising opportunity for our organization that will have profound effects on our ability to provide competitive and recreational physical activities for participants with disabilities in Iowa.

The system in place for the volunteers is extremely user-friendly. Each volunteer will have a wireless device that will print the ticket as well as update a real-time amount ticker on the scoreboard.

Each volunteer will receive free admission and a free ticket to another game!

 Volunteer Age Requirement:  13 & Up!

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Fun Zone Attendants

Shifts begin at 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. and run through 8:30 or 9:00 p.m.

Reggie's Sleepout

Details

Join us in the fight to end youth homelessness in Iowa! We need more than 50 volunteers throughout this event, where participants sleepout on the field at Drake Stadium for one night and learn more about this critical cause. Volunteer positions include assisting with set-up/tear down, serving in the food tent, and more. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. Reggie’s Sleepout is a great individual or group volunteer opportunity!

German Samstagsschule

Details

We provide a fun and immersive environment for kids- preschool through 9th grade – to learn, improve, and practice the German language! During the classes we explore different themes while playing games, reading stories, making crafts and doing a number of fun activities and projects.

We would love to welcome volunteers, currently enrolled in the German language program at their high school, who would enjoy practicing their own German language skills while helping our students! We are looking for student volunteers who would enjoy assisting our instructors in our younger classrooms, helping setting up classroom activities and projects, and supporting the instructor throughout the lessons. Brenton Arboretum Halloween Drive-Through

We are looking for a few volunteers to help set up displays and run stations during our Halloween Drive-Through event. Clive Youth Basketball League

We are looking for help with set up and tear down during out youth basketball league. Volunteers will set up & put away tables, chairs, scoreboards and signage. You will also assist with sweeping gym floors & bleachers, taking out trash, etc. Volunteers can sign up for the morning or evening shift, or both!
