  • Saturday, September 25: Applefest 

Help us with a day of family fun celebrating apple harvest season! Visitors will get a chance to visit our historic sites to see how past cooks would prepare and serve apple treats, such as apple butter, cake or pie, and cider. Print an apple recipe in the print shop, and purchase apple goodies and tasty treats from local food vendors. Volunteer positions are available to those 16 years and older. Volunteers between the ages of 10-15 years are welcome when accompanied by an adult volunteer.

  • Saturday, October 9: Indigenous Iowans Day

Help us celebrate and explore some of the indigenous history and culture that helped shape our state. Volunteer positions are available to those 16 years and older. Volunteers between the ages of 10-15 years are welcome when accompanied by an adult volunteer.

  • Friday-Sunday, October 15-17 and 22-24: Family Halloween

Help us celebrate a safe, non-scary trick-or-treating at our historic businesses in the 1876 town of Walnut Hill. Volunteer to hand out treats, assist with games like pumpkin ring toss and candy corn bowling. Living History Farms will offer “teal pumpkin” stops safe for trick-or-treaters with allergies. Volunteer positions are available to those 16 years and older. Volunteers between the ages of 10-15 years are welcome when accompanied by an adult volunteer.
